Local history
A bit of Highlands history
Highlands was founded in 1875 by Samuel Truman Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson, who had already started towns in Kansas. A legend says they picked the plateau because lines drawn on a map between major cities crossed there. In 1927 a dam on the Cullasaja River formed Lake Sequoyah, and in 1929 a new road through the Cullasaja Gorge to Highlands was finished.
