The Andrews area was Cherokee land until the removal of the Cherokee in the late 1830s. Before the railroad, the settlement was known as Valley Town; when the line came through around 1890, the town was named for Colonel Alexander Boyd Andrews, a railroad vice-president. Lumber and tanning were its first industries, around 1900.
