Hayesville's name honors George W. Hayes, a member of the North Carolina General Assembly who worked for the creation of Clay County, formed in 1861. Spikebuck Mound, on the Hiwassee River in Hayesville, stands at the site of Quanassee, a Cherokee town. The brick courthouse on the town square dates from the late 1880s.
