A bit of Almond history
The old town of Almond stood on the Nantahala River beside the railroad, and the writer Olive Tilford Dargan kept a part-time home in the area. In the mid-1920s several small schools in and around Almond were consolidated into the Almond School. Fontana Lake began to fill behind Fontana Dam in November 1944 and covered the old town.
